Job Description

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduces street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.

DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
With a fleet of 155 vehicles, Fleet Administration ensures prompt and safe transport of both Family and Adult Services clientele on several shifts and locations. They are also equipped to transport disabled clients (wheelchair bound). Fleet is also responsible for logistics and materials for the agency. Fleet moves clients from shelters to permanent housing, HERO transfers, view apartments, sign leases and provide transportation from our Intake Centers.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Supervisor of Motor Transport who will:

- Supervise automotive operations of a departmental garage or automotive service facility.

- Manage a team of Motor Vehicle Supervisor, their time and leave and distribute assignments accordingly.

- Supervise a team of City Laborers, their time and leave and distribute assignments accordingly.

- Dispatching personnel, motor vehicles and equipment to fulfill transportations requests and assignments.

- Scheduling subordinate personnel to perform servicing, minor repairing, and storage of automotive vehicles.

- Inspecting garage activities and facilities to ensure compliance with established standards and practices.

- Investigating complaints on automotive service and operations. M-5 and Holman.

- Receiving reports on the condition of motor vehicles and equipment repaired or needing repairs.

- Directing the performance of minor repairs and refers major repairs to appropriate sections. M-5 and Holman.

- Preparing and enforcing routines of periodic oiling, lubrication, and washing of vehicles, their tire servicing, and the dispensing of gasoline as authorized for vehicular uses.

- Initiating requisitions for needed supplies and automotive servicing equipment.

Hours/Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30pm

Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
License Requirements - a valid chauffeur's license issued by the New York State Bureau of Motor Vehicles;
AND
1. Seven (7) years of satisfactory experience in the operation or servicing of motor vehicles and/or motor driven equipment, including two (2) years of satisfactory experience in responsible charge of a motor vehicle or delivery service operation or a large phase thereof; or

2. Satisfactory completion of an approved 8th year of elementary school course of a satisfactory equivalent education, and five (5) years of satisfactory experience in the operation or servicing of motor vehicles and/or motor driven equipment, including two (2) years of satisfactory experience in responsible charge of a motor vehicle or delivery service operation or a large phase thereof; or

3. High school graduation, and three (3) years of satisfactory service in the operation or servicing of motor vehicles and/or motor driven equipment, including two (2) years of satisfactory experience in responsible charge of a motor vehicle or delivery service operation or a large phase thereof; or

4. A satisfactory equivalent.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
