The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.
The Division of Facilities Management, Real Estate and Construction (FMC) is responsible for the maintenance of all DEP facilities, Responsible for all Real Estate, Property Management, and Maintenance at over 300 City-owned and leased DEP facilities. The bureau provides facilities management and administrative support services to DEP in the areas of asbestos / lead assessment and abatement, mold remediation, capital projects, construction services, services, real estate management and space planning.
We are seeking an experienced Carpenter Supervisor to lead and coordinate a team of skilled carpenters and related trades. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on leadership role, excels at planning and overseeing complex carpentry projects, and is committed to maintaining high quality workmanship throughout all phases of construction, maintenance, and repair.
Reporting to the Director of Construction Services, the Supervisor Carpenter will carry out the responsibilities outlined below.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign and lay out work for carpenters and closely allied trades.
- Supervise, direct, and inspect carpentry work involving installation or replacement of flooring, doors, hardware, trim, window frames, sashes, partitions, and related components.
- Review plans, specifications, and field conditions to estimate labor, materials, and job requirements.
- Identify, request, and obtain all materials, tools, and equipment essential for project execution.
- Oversee daily operations of departmental carpentry shop, ensuring safe and efficient workflow.
- Plan and supervise heavy and rough carpentry work, including construction and repair of shoring, bulkheads, scaffolds, docks, sheds, and promenades.
- Inspect work progress at all stages, evaluate contractor performance, and ensure adherence to contract specifications, direct corrective actions when necessary.
- Determine appropriate ladders, scaffolds, or platforms for each job to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Conduct field visits to evaluate work requests, assess site conditions, and determine work methods; resolve issues to prevent delays.
- Coordinate with other trade supervisors and division managers to ensure smooth project execution.
- Prepare work orders and maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and maintenance schedules; generate reports and correspondence as needed.
- Manage inventory of tools, parts, and equipment; source suppliers, compare pricing, and standardize materials for durability and ease of maintenance.
- Perform hands-on carpentry work during emergencies or when staffing shortages occur.
- Maintain organized records and prepare required reports.
- Operate a motor vehicle or equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
SUPERVISOR CARPENTER - 92071
1. Seven (7) years of recent, satisfactory, full time, paid experience as a carpenter, at least two (2) years of which must have been spent in duties of a supervisory nature; or
2. A satisfactory equivalent.
- Proven experience as a carpenter with supervisory or lead responsibilities. - Strong knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, and safety practices. - Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications. - Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. - Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. - Experience coordinating with other trades and contractors. - A motor vehicle driver’s license, valid in the state of New York. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
