Job Description
The Code & Zoning Specialist is responsible for interpretations regarding code and zoning issues.
- Regularly consult with principals, including owners, design professionals and contractors to anticipate and resolve potential zoning, code, or other regulatory issues in order to minimize impact on the critical path of project schedules.
- Evaluate and track construction activities in New Building (NB) applications or major alteration (ALT. l) applications for complex, high profile developments throughout the city. This includes: performing comprehensive plan examination reviews with citywide borough offices to resolve complicated code and zoning issues and facilitate approvals; performing on-site inspections and assessments during every major construction milestone and during other complex activities, including demolition or excavation.
- Review and address determinations submitted by applicants, builders, and the general public.
- Serve as expert consultant in emergencies involving possible structural damage to buildings.
- Document meeting proceedings and decisions.
- Identify operational issues and provide recommendations for improving the day-to-day plan examination unit operation.
- Coordinate with code specialists in each borough to ensure uniformity of decision making.
- Conduct emergency response and field inspections as required by the agency during business hours and after hours.
- Work with the Chief Plan Examiner to oversee the processing of objections sheets generated by plan examination to ensure validity, accuracy and completeness. Overseeing appoints to ensure that plan examiners demonstrate code knowledge, procedural knowledge, thoroughness, and professionalism.
- Hold monthly staff meetings to discuss policies and procedures to ensure their uniform implementation.
- Answer correspondence, including inquiries from the general public.
- Represent the Department of Buildings at inter-agency and industry meetings.
WORK LOCATION:
Unit assignment and work location are based on operational need. Transfers may occur at any time with sufficient notice.
CIVIL SERVICE STATUS:
Only those who are permanent in the Administrative Architect civil service title, applicants who are reachable on the Administrative Architect open competitive list, and applicants as indicated below will be considered.
Candidates who are permanent in comparable civil service titles may be considered for title change under rule 6.1.9 of the Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of New York.
REMOTE WORK:
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.

ADMIN ARCHITECT (NON MGRL) M-1 - 1000A
Minimum Qualifications
A valid New York State Registration as an Architect is required. In addition, candidates must have six ( 6 ) years of full-time paid experience in architectural work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative architect.
