The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
The Department of Homeless Services seeks a Clerical Associate III in the Housing Emergency Referral Operations (HERO) Unit. HERO is the sole 24/7 DHS organizational unit that identifies and secures shelter for families and single adults who apply for emergency housing assistance. HERO is composed of seven sections: Placement, Transfers and Transportation, Vacancy Control for Families with Children and Single Adults, Data & Systems, Strategic Initiatives, Care Day Certification and Portfolio Management.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Clerical Associate III to function as a Vacancy Control Specialist who will
- Directly process vacancy control functions in CARES.
- Manage the DHS family shelter portfolio of unit availability, make changes in family compositions, and exits from placement.
- Report to the Manager of Vacancy Control and be responsible for managing the offline process and supervise clerical associates assigned as needed. Be responsible for working with Providers and generating reports for vacancies and exits in DHS’ shelter portfolio.
- The selected candidates will Maintain liaison with multiple agencies and providers to obtain and convey information for bed management to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of data and lodging.
- Ensure that appropriate notifications are documented from DHS program divisions and shelter providers and clerical functions in the Unit.

Qualification Requirements
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of satisfactory clerical experience.
Skills Requirement
Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 key strokes (20 words) per minute.
