Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis (BEPA) leads the NYC Green Infrastructure Program through which the City is implementing various nature-based stormwater management solutions such as rain gardens, green and blue roofs, porous pavement, subsurface systems, and other innovative stormwater management technologies. These stormwater management practices absorb stormwater before it enters the sewer system and help to improve the water quality of local waterways and can also reduce localized flooding. BEPA staff are involved in all stages of the Green Infrastructure Program including urban planning, engineering design, project management, construction oversight, operations and maintenance, research and development, as well as enforcement of regulations.
Under supervision, the selected candidate will support BEPA staff on various facets of stormwater management work to support the NYC Green Infrastructure Program.
The selected candidate is expected to perform typical tasks:
- Inspections of stormwater management practices such as rain gardens, porous pavement, and subsurface practices across all boroughs;
- Collect field measurements and other field data
- Interact with maintenance staff and contractors
- Utilize analytical tools such as ArcGIS, SQL, R, and/or Python to perform statistical and spatial analyses
- Produce compelling data visualizations and conduct data analysis to communicate findings
In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.
